I decided it would be fun to play a round of Twenty Questions-Gardening, except that I would limit my four players to one question each (so I guess it should be called Four Questions-Gardening). For my version, players are presented a photo of a seedling or young plant, and after the questions have been asked and then answered (by me), they each offer a guess. But because the original panel members are not available, I decided to invite some of our forest friends to join in. It was difficult to find willing participants, but I was finally able to secure a cheeky foursome open to new experiences (not to mention vying for a promised reward!). During my quest, I found that it would not be easy to corral these masked marauders, and I had to cautiously approach each one to offer my bold proposal.

My first encounter with Gerard did not turn out well. He appreciated the incentive, but when I told him the rules of the game, his reaction was a little uncivil.

“Who, me?” little Adele squealed. “Will I be on TV? Cause I have a good side and a bad side!”

Percy listened quietly as I explained my requirements, and when I finished, he frowned. “This better not be a bunch of rubbish!” he growled. “No, wait….”

“You can see I’m trying to sleep, right?” Betts grumbled, closing her eyes. I started to walk away, last fall’s leaves crackling under each step. “Hey!” The voice came from above. I turned around and gazed up at the lifeless figure. She had clearly not moved–far from it. But those eyes! They were wide and dark, and–dare I say–mocking. Unsure what to do next, I crossed my arms and waited. A moment later she lifted her head slightly. “Did you say ‘winner take all?'”
My panelists were finally in place–well, they had been selected anyway–and our game would take place the next day….
