The manatee, known as the sea cow in my novel, Elanora and the Salt Marsh Mystery, has faced uncertainty for years. Not only do many manatees die due to collisions with boats, but for the last few years their food source has been decimated in Florida due to toxins found in Lake Okeechobee. When excess water is released by the Army Corp of Engineers, this toxic water smothers and kills seagrasses necessary for the manatee’s survival. More than 500 manatees have died in 2022.

These gentle creatures have no natural predators except for humans, and because of this manatees are listed as “endangered.”

Through a series of terrifying events, Elanora is transported to a strange world where the only way to get about is by water and the only food to eat are the grasses of the marsh. Her adoptive parents guide and protect her, but she is treated poorly by the muskrat colony. When Elanora discovers that the marsh is losing water, she suspects humans are the cause and formulates a plan to save the swimming creatures and the colony. Even though she finally secures the help of an elder and the very ones who at first scorned her, the rest of the colony resist her efforts to save them.
Will Elanora convince the colony and the swimmers to overcome their fear of the unknown so they will survive?

In this book the author takes you on an adventure in her quest for a promising future for her daughter. Along the way, Miss Jae recounts the trials and errors and even the missteps in her pursuit of helping her daughter learn how to learn. At journey’s end she provides several resources for parents who either need to implement therapy themselves or who want to be actively involved with their child’s ABA providers. When I first began writing the book, I knew the protagonist would be a chipmunk (hence the illustration on the cover and inside the book). These tiny creatures are not found in southwest Florida, so this fact lent itself to writing not only about the ecological aspects of Florida marshes but the ensuing problems that such a creature might encounter merely by being transplanted to a salt marsh. The marsh’s inhabitants, especially the round-tailed muskrats, must choose to either accept the newcomer or shun her presence.

Elanora and the Salt Marsh Mystery explores the consequences of bullying, the outright disdain for diversity and the sometimes irreversible devastation some humans have inflicted on ecologically sensitive habitats. And despite the colony’s disdain for the newcomer, one lone young chipmunk does her best to convince the colony of muskrats that their home is in peril.

These subjects and more are explored with the help of not only chipmunks and muskrats, but also with roseate spoonbills, mullets, white-tailed deer, squirrels, frogs, yellow-crowned night herons, a cormorant, terrapins, blue jays, marsh rabbits, great blue heron, crows, hawks and great horned owls.

I have been writing for many years, and I’m thrilled to have published my first book.

From Prompting to Shaping to Letting Go: My Love Affair With ABA and How Being a “Bad Mom” Helped My Daughter With Autism Succeed is a labor of love, and I am so happy that others will know about the journey my daughter and I took so many years ago. The road was not an easy one, and although we encountered many obstacles along the way, I knew that giving up was not an option. I am very proud of her, and she continues to amaze me. In past lives I have been a proofreader, editor, newspaper reporter and columnist, newsletter writer for a wildlife organization and writer of one-act plays. I consider my six-year stint as a home-based behavioral program director in the ‘90s my most difficult, albeit important, job and am counting the days until all autism-related ABA therapy positions go the way of the dodo. Two of my short stories made it to the finals of the 2017 Florida Writer’s Association Royal Palm Literary Award Competition. My second novel, Island Times Three, is scheduled to be released August 2021.
